Another plot hole is the clear explosion deaths of Vultureman and Ratar-O in the Rat Star. The ship and Vultureman seem to survive though.

Yes, it does seem the writers wrote out Ratar-O to make room for the Lunataks; you never see him in any other following stories. However, Ratar-O was never a major character in this series, so I don't view his absence as any great loss. And, yes, it is interesting how Lion-O, without being told, learned that Fire Rock Mountain was where the Thunderians were. Maybe he'd been taking telepathy lessons from Cheetara in his spare time?
