WB Summary:
While trying to uncover the location of the next stone, the Thundercats cross paths with a mad man who is trying to insert the souls of his long lost family into machines. When Soul Sever steals the Book of Omens in pursuit of this goal, Lion-O must help restore SS humanity or risk being turned into one of his mechanical monstrosities.
Purrsia's Synopsis:
Inexplicably, the ThunderCats look to be outside Dog City (even though last ep had them 2 days out), but at least they've caught back up with Kit and Kat. They're frustrated with Tank repairs and a Book that must be "broken" as it only points up for the location of the next stone. The ThunderCats come upon an old friend, Jorma, whose moved his "junk" operations near a junkyard of sorts - a junkyard that gets replenished from pieces of ships and things that fall from above. Lion-O, Panthro and Tygra go to Jorma's shop have him check the Book of Omens for problems, as it just keeps pointing up, but they soon realize it's not broken. They need to go up to where those parts are falling from. Unfortunately, a creature called the Soul Sever is also interested in the parts from above, and soon sends his Necromechs to scout the most recent crop of fallen debris. They retrieve the Book of Omens and strip the ThunderTank - the Cats not much of a match for the tech.
The trio (it is mentioned that Cheetara and the kids are off somewhere "missing all this" - where Pumyra is, who knows) use one of Jorma's mechanical critters, Flicker, to track where the creatures went, and soon find themselves in the Sever's home base. He is intrigued by the book, as he finds it has a living soul in it, giving him hope for his cause which is to put the souls of his family into a mechanized body to bring them back to "life". He won't give up the Book, and when Tygra tries to take it, he is attacked by the Sever. The others are soon captured as well, and used by the Sever in an experiment.
Flicker is able to free Lion-O and stop Panthro from going into the machine where the soul will be severed, but the Soul Sever stops it from freeing Tygra and occupies Lion-O, so that Tygra's soul is taken from him and put into a mechanized version of himself. He's out of control though, needing souls to feed on to stay alive, and soon consumes the Sever's family souls. The Sever still thinks he can control this, despite what his creators, the Necromackers, had warned him about this very thing. Flicker again comes to the rescue, sacrificing itself to send out a pulse powerful enough, through the Book of Omens, to destroy the mech Tygra. Tygra's soul returns to its body, but the Sever's family has nothing to return to but the great above.
The ThunderCats are then allowed to leave with the book while the Sever grieves the loss of his family's souls. But then Flicker isn't quite done for yet...and perhaps neither are the Sever's ambitions.
Quotes:
"Sometimes all this tech is more trouble than it's worth. I'm starting to see why our ancestors left it behind." - Lion-O
"Whoever it is, they have technology beyond our imagination." - Jorma, regarding whoever lives above in the sky.
"You're not the only one with a built-in hydrolic intensifier." - Panthro, to a Necromech
"No one has ever seen him, just his work. While these machines are only products of their programming, Sever is working to create robots with souls." - Jorma, on the Soul Sever.
"You know what else is impossible? A cat with robot arms." - Tygra's retort to the idea that robots with souls is impossible.
"He is imperfect. As are all of you - perfect souls trapped in imperfect vessels." - the Soul Sever to the ThunderCats.
"It's hard not to when this scourge was used to destroy everyting I hold dear." - Lion-O's response to the Sever's question as to whether he sees technology as evil.
"I argued that if their natural bodies failed, let us make better ones. The Necromackers warned that would be a perversion of the sacred balance between nature and technology. They had tried before with disasterous consequence." - The Soul Sever, explaining how thsoe that created him did not approve of his goals to put the souls of his family into robotic bodies.
"I suggest that if you value your fragile organic life, you will leave now." - The Soul Sever
"You already lost them. Now it's time for you to finally let them go!" - Lion-O, trying to reason with the Soul Sever regarding the souls of his family.
"In the end, technology isn't the disease or the cure. And I can't blame it for how evil minds might use it." - Lion-O, coming to terms with tech.
Facts of Note:
Flicker helps Jorma keep the scavengers away, via his powerful gigaspark.
Apparently Jorma is the only one that notices junk falls from the sky every day.
The Soul Sever determined there's a soul that lives inside the Book of Omens (and by the visual, it's Jaga's), and that there's infomation about past, present and future as well in the Book.
When they run past the wreck of an air ship, Tygra remarks that it must be one of the ships Lion-O had seen in the Book.
Classic Compare/Contrast:
Not too much to compare here, though I'm thinking with what happened to the Tank and the looks of that flying machine they walked past twice in the ep (and Panthro hinted that if it worked it could take them to the next stone), we might see a flying vehicle in the next show, and it might be based on one of the OS vehicles - the Feliner? The ThunderStrike? Something else? I'm curious to see.
Purrsia's Two Cents:
Glad they got back to some subjects here some fans (*cough* me *cough) have been wondering about...like the whole tech vs. no tech thing, the stones etc. Fill in some of those gaps and get back on point, yeah! The Soul Sever was a sort of sympathic "bad guy" in that it was his misplaced obsession with those he'd loved that caused the trouble, and he did end up listening to reason at the right moment - costing him what was left of his family. So not a pure evil character by any means...but then how tough can a guy be who's basically wearing elven heels? Really. Look at capture #111
Funny that the Sever thought mechanical things so infallible - guess he never heard of rust among other things heh heh. A vain pursuit indeed.
Over all, good ep with a good message, and like I said, finally tied up some issues with tech etc that Lion-O resolved, moved the plot a little closer to the next stone - pretty entertaining too.
