Episode 10: Sight Beyond Sight
Original Air Date: November 4th, 2011
Episode Written by: Todd Casey, Directed by: Yoshiharu Ashino
Article by: Purrsia

Not bad, but not fabulotastic neither...

WB Summary:
The Cats track the location of the first stone to the mystical Elephant Village, but Lion-O can't find the specific location and the forgetful Elephants no longer remember where it is. Lion-O must learn to use Sight Beyond Sight and interpret the consequences of his actions when he inadvertently invites an attack on the village.

Purrsia's Synopsis:
The ThunderTank is rolling along, and the Book is pointing the way to the next Stone. Lion-O is impatient to get there, but Panthro maintains slow and steady gets you there...without blowing out the samoflange. The good old competition spirit is sparked between Lion-O and Tygra, and the two board the ThunderRacers for a little friendly race. Cheetara and Panthro eventually get in on the racing, the only snafu being WilyKat's unfortunate red button pressing incident (Good grief, if it had only been labeled CTW, we'd have had a full blown Circus Train moment). Pressing the button sent out seeking missiles, which add more than a little excitement to the race. FYI, Tygra wins the race as he cockily predicted.

They reach a village after climbing many steps to find a group of meditating elephant folk. They soon find out these elephants do forget, adding some humor to their first meeting. These elephant people have a Buddhist monk vibe, and receive the Thundercats well, though their memory issues hinder how helpful they can be. The Spirit Stone is there somewhere, but because the elephants are so absent minded, the Thundercats will have to find it by other means, and the Eye of Thundera's Second Sight seems to be the way to go. If only Lion-O can learn to tap into its power.

Meanwhile, the Thundercats help the elephants move their harvest to a safe place, although the elephants can't remember what they're saving it from. Lion-O soon finds out when the noise of the wraiths approach break his concentration during his Sword lesson - they've come to steal the elephants' harvest!

After a musical interlude (not sure if I was still watching Thundercats or at the Ren Fair for a minute - almost expencted a pickle vendor to pop out from somewhere and make lude remarks lol), where pefect harmonay shatters stone, we're back to Lion-O and his quest...to go after the wraiths. He really knows how to concentrate on the task at hand, don't he? He manages to get rid of the 'pests', but unwittingly awakens something far more threatening for the elephants.
He learns too late that the noises of the wraiths were all that kept a rock creature from awakening and storming the elephants' village - Lion-O had disrupted the balance and harmony of things, even if his intentions had been good. He has failed once again to see the bigger picture, and therefore couldn't predict the consequences of his actions.

The elephants' response to the rock creature's approach is to go meditate. The adult Thundercats opt to go fight it before it can reach the village. It looks like they defeat it, the monster finally crumbling under their assault. But it soon reanimates and entombs the adult 'Cats in a stone prison. The creature moves on to the village.
There, Kit has decided to join the elephants in meditating, but gets frightened when the creature arrives and starts destroying the village. The elephant tells her to let the answer come to her. Kit decides to start playing music, and when the elephants join in, their perfect harmony shatters the creature for good. The creature destroyed, the rock tomb is no longer enchanted and the adult ThunderCats are able to free themselves.

Afterward, Lion-O finally understands why he's struggling with Sight Beyond Sight and tries one more time to see more about the Stone's location. He sees the Stone in a nearby hut but when Lion-O goes to look, nothing is there. The elephants suggest gonig to an enchanted forest where the Sword's power - and Lion-O's connection with it - will be amplified. But they can't remember where it is!

Quotes:

"It is more than a tool, Lion-O. It is a part of you." - Lion-O's elephant mentor trying to get him to understand that second sight will show him more if he is in harmony with the Sword.

"We are understanding." - an elephant's response to Lion-O asking if they're going to do anything about the wraiths' raid.

"It seems we achieved perfect harmony. A beautiful and powerful thing." - an elephant's explanation for mustical notes that broke stone.

"We elephants may not remember much, but we always remember there is a delicate balance to all things." - and that would be the moral of this here show.

Facts of Note:

Here's a fun trivia fact - the one elephant accidently calls Lion-O, "Lion-L", which for those familiar with details about the old series, was supposed to be Lion-O's original character name.

We learn that the song Kit often plays on her instrument is a lullaby her mother used to hum for her and her brother.

Classic Compare/Contrast:

The claw sheild has the same life-saving projectiles in it that allow the bearer to expel and hook onto or into something here, as it had in the old show. Lucky for Lino-O!
I've also noticed that when Lion-O calls for the power of the Sword, the beam shoots out of the Eye itself, not the tip of the Sword as in the OS.
The rock being recalled The Rock Giant a bit.
I do continue to like how this series handles the Sword's powers and how Lion-O kinda has to learn and grow in order to best use the Sword. In the OS, that notion was uneven at best, and the Sword a little too all-powerful.

Purrsia's Two Cents:

"It's when Lion-O is trying to be the most helpful that he's smashing the wraiths...on the thing...and waking some rock giant!"
A little outtake humor there :-p

Anyway, this episode had some good moments, although parts of it dragged I think. I didn't mind the forgetful elephants as much as some others did, I guess I could see the humor in it. I like that they're back on task to finding the stones, but one part of the story that seems to be forgotten is this whole ado about technology. At any rate, hope to see Slithe, Mumm-Ra and/or Grune again soon. These side stories are fun for world-building, but we haven't seen some of these guys in a while. It's time to check back in methinks.
