The kingdom of Thundera in ruins, Lion-O, Cheetara and Tygra have a funeral pyre for the fallen Claudus at the base of his ruined statue. Meanwhile, WilyKit and WilyKat loot the lootings of the lizards, swiping a trunk of clothes when the lizards aren't looking.
Blinded by his passion for revenge on those that murdered his father, Lion-O insists on seeking out Mumm-Ra over the objections of Cheetara and Tygra. They want to follow the instructions of Jaga, who advised them to find the Book of Omens before Mumm-Ra does. However, they reluctantly follow their young new leader, Lion-O.
Suited up in cloaks, the trio head out of the ruins of their kingdom and into the wild unknowns of Third Earth. Early on, Kit and Kat notice the group and beg to join them on their travels. Lion-O refuses to babysit on the journey, although Cheetara and Tygra take pity on the children. Still, the new King's orders are heeded, and the kids are not officially welcomed though they follow the group anyway.
Crossing through many lands, and nearly out of supplies, they finally reach what is called the Sand Sea. Lion-O is sure Mumm-Ra's lair will be on the other side of this sea. What they find in the Sand Sea is some food, food they are desperate to devour. Their carelessness is their downfall, as they quickly learn it was bait for capture.
The group finds themselves first captives of odd Sand Sea-faring fishmen, but after the first appearance of a beast called the Ramlak, the captain of the ship decides to spare the brave Thundercats. Lion-O and he, in fact, bond in their mutual rage and drive to avenge those that have harmed them. But then Lion-O comes to realize that the Captain is so driven, he's invited his own destruction. Lion-O himself comes to his senses in time to save the rest of the crew and his friends from the Ramlak, destroying the beast and in turn restoring the oasis the Ramlak had consumed. He knows they must seek out the Book now, as instructed. Lion-O also allows Kit and Kat to tag along, given they've proven they can take care of themselves.
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra has Jaga held captive, determined to force the mystical Thundercat to reveal the location of the Book of Omens...
Quotes:
"Jaga told us to first seek out the Book of Omens. Those were my teacher's last words to us." - Cheetara
WilyKat: Just so you know we're not following you.
WilyKit: *You're* just walking in front of us.
"The food's fighting better than you!" - Captain Cornelius, regarding the Thundercats, to his frightened crew.
"Do you know what it's like, Lion-O, to have everything taken from you, and replaced with rage?" - Captain Cornelius.
Facts of Note:
The kittens wish to seek the city of treasure, El Darra.
Classic Compare/Contrast:
This episode had more of the feel of the classic show in its early days, what with the "adventure of the day" theme, and the strange place/odd Third Earther breed introduced. Also, we clearly got a taste of "young Lion-O grows and learns a lesson" from the adventure too. Just like old times!
In fact, some of the areas they travel through remind me of classic locations in the old series, such as the bottomless chasm and field of daggers.
Purrsia's Two Cents:
I have to say, because I forgot to in my review of the debut episodes, that there are good and bad wardrobe updates. But thank goodness Lion-O no longer wears the blue speedos! LOL
Also, the Thunderkittens are SO CUTE! They steal every scene they're in. Can't get enough of the cuteness!
Over-all I thought this episode was entertaining, even if the storytelling was a bit formulaic. Lion-O had flashes of being brash and smug, just like his classic naive counterpart in the 80s series. And I think Tygra fans will probably be happier with this episode, as his behavior is toned down. Guess losing everything humbled him!
